GT Program Description

Crockett County CCSD

Gifted/Talented Services K–12

At Crockett County CCSD we are committed to meeting the needs of all students, including this special population. Our students have many gifts and talents. The services described below address the advanced academic needs of gifted and talented (G/T) students in the four core areas. We are committed to placing G/T students in classes that meet their needs academically, as well as nurture their gifts and talents in other areas.

Elementary Services

Ozona Elementary has one G/T teacher in each grade for 1st grade to 5th grade. The elementary G/T teachers are Mrs. Harris, Mrs. Purvis, Ms. Poindexter, Mr. Gully, and Mrs. Williams. G/T students are strategically placed in small groups with G/T teachers. All of these teachers will differentiate their curriculum to meet the needs of the G/T students in their classes. These teachers will advance students’ skills they have already mastered and move students on to new learning. In these classrooms, you will see flexible grouping, tiered instruction, centers, higher level thinking, open-ended tasks, independent study, and student choice. The Texas Performance Standards Project (www.texaspsp.org) will be used as a guide for the independent study projects.

Middle School Services

G/T services at our middle school campus prepare students for advanced-level work beginning in sixth grade. G/T students are placed in these classes with G/T-trained teachers. These designated teachers will meet on a regular basis and will coordinate interdisciplinary independent study units. The middle school G/T teachers are Mrs. Claburn, Mrs. Luna, Mrs. Fricke, and Mrs. Criswell. In these classes, students will master the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills objectives and will move on to advanced-level content. The Texas Performance Standards Project (www.texaspsp.org) will be used as a guide for the independent study projects. It comprises a set of performance standards, curricula, and assessments for differentiating instruction and deepening academic learning. TPSP enhances gifted/talented (G/T) programs. We will have a spring G/T Expo.

High School Services

G/T services at our high school campus prepare students for college-level work. Students have an opportunity to enroll in Social Studies Research Methods class and dual credit courses. During the Research Methods class students conduct advanced research on a selected topic in social studies using qualitative and/or quantitative methods of inquiry. Students present their research results and conclusions in written and visual or oral format. The high school G/T teachers are Mrs. Ducote, Mrs. Crenwelge, and Mrs. Gutierrez. All these teachers will differentiate their curriculum to meet the needs of the G/T students in their classes. These teachers will advance students’ skills they have already mastered and move students on to new learning. In these classrooms, you will see flexible grouping, tiered instruction, higher level thinking, open-ended tasks, independent study, and student choice.
